Martin Luther is one of the most-studied figures in history. Many of these studies have turned Luther into a waxen nose, molded to fit the ideas of the theologian or scholar rather than Luther himself. At this conference we will look behind false constructs of Luther to see what Luther himself said, and what the real Luther might offer to the church today. We will examine the medieval context of Luther to get a better sense for the way he thinks and writes, then take a fresh look at what Luther says about the church, sacraments, prayer, and spiritual care. What we will find is a Luther who has much to offer pastors in the 21st-century as they care for the sheep entrusted to their care.
Aaron Moldenhauer is Assistant Professor of Theology at Concordia University Wisconsin. His research focuses on Luther’s relation to the Middle Ages, and particularly Luther’s use of nominalist philosophy in his theology.
He has spoken on Luther both nationally and internationally, and is revising his dissertation on Luther’s Christological disputations for publication. He is also writing a book on Christology for the Reconstructions of Lutheran Doctrinal Theology series, as well as contributing to the Oxford Handbook of the Pelagian Controversy. Before coming to Concordia, he served as associate pastor of Zion Lutheran Church and School in Beecher, IL, for twelve years. He and his wife Tabitha live in Grafton, WI with their two daughters.
