"Developing A Lutheran Pastoral Devotional Life"

The Church today faces a number of challenges that can take a toll on those who are called into her Holy Ministry. Of course, that has always been true and will remain true until the Last Day. The work of a Pastor is the being Word and Sacrament to the people of God. This is a joyous calling but it can be, at times, exhausting and lonely. The pastoral life cannot be strengthened by the secular world's methods but only by Divine resources. These resources are always there and we will examine them under the headings of formative elements, community elements and individual elements.

Rev. Dr. Daniel Gard

The Reverend Daniel Lee Gard, Ph.D.
Rear Admiral, Chaplain Corps, United States Navy (Retired)
President Emeritus, Concordia University Chicago

The Rev. Daniel L. Gard holds a B.A. in history (Carthage College), a M.Div. (Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne), a M.A. in Hebrew Bible (University of Notre Dame), and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible/Judaica, with minors in New Testament and Liturgics (University of Notre Dame). He was ordained in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in 1984.

Following his ordination, Gard served as a parish pastor and, in 1988, was commissioned as a Lieutenant-Junior Grade in the Navy Reserve. During his years of military service, Gard also served from 1989-2014 as a Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he served in administrative positions including Dean of the Graduate School and Dean of Military Chaplaincy Programs. From 2014-2019, he served as President of Concordia University Chicago. Following his retirement from Concordia University Chicago, he has returned to Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne as a Guest Professor.

After many tours and years of military service, Gard was nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama in 2013 to serve as Rear Admiral (Lower Half) and Deputy Chief of Chaplains for Reserve Matters in the U.S. Navy. In these roles, Gard was responsible for overseeing military chaplain operations in Navy, Marine and Coast Guard Reserve units around the world. Gard notably served during the 9/11 Pentagon rescue/recovery operations in Washington, D.C., in Operation Iraqi Freedom, as Command Chaplain Joint Task Force-Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and as Deputy Chaplain of the Marine Corps for Reserve Matters. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and various campaign and service medals. In addition to his military awards, Gard received the St. Martin of Tours Award in 2008 from the former LCMS Board for Mission Services for his exceptionally meritorious service. He retired from the Navy in 2016.

The completion of the 2018-2019 academic year marked Gard’s retirement as the eleventh president of Concordia University Chicago. His experiences and gifts are broad: ministering to civilian and military personnel, leading a growing University with international outreach, teaching Hebrew to future LCMS pastors, serving as an accomplished author and speaker across the country, comforting grieving families on 9/11, providing spiritual guidance to countless parishioners, military personnel and families, and students. He and his beloved wife Annette Kay Scheumann Gard married in 1982 and have been blessed with three children: Rachel, Hannah, and Caleb.

(He does look good in uniform too)
